Try to teach kids about the HVAC system; now they’re too informed

When my kids were growing up I always wanted them to understand how things worked in the real world.

I don’t feel like parents are doing their children any favors when they protect them too much from the stresses of managing your finances and family life.

It is rather difficult to balance your family budget these days when so many things are rapidly changing. I always wanted my kids to have a good handle on responsible money practices, including managing their monthly bills. One of the most expensive parts of being a human these days is dealing with the unfortunate climate change. We have to use our central heating and cooling system on a regular basis to keep our indoor air quality within reason. It can be difficult to pay off the energy bill when your heating and cooling system is running each day. This is why I tried to educate my kids on heating and cooling maintenance, repair, and thermostat settings. I wanted them to understand that you can’t crank the thermostat in either direction without consequences for your entire heating and cooling system. Your air conditioning unit and forced air furnace will break down much sooner if you are constantly messing with the indoor air temperature control settings. I taught my kids these important skills from an early age… But now I regret it sometimes. In fact, they have become little heating and cooling Nazis. Anytime I touch the thermostat to raise the indoor air temperature up or down a few degrees both of the kids start lecturing me on proper HVAC control settings.
